The Holy Bible

Memory Verse: “Prophecy came not in old time by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” 2 Peter 1:21

Introduction
•    This is an introductory lesson to the Holy Bible. In this lesson, we will see who wrote the Holy Bible, when it was written, why it was written, and the major categories of the books of the Scriptures.
•    There are many sacred books in our Church, but this lesson focuses on the Scriptures of the Holy Bible.

The Lesson
•    The Holy Bible is a sacred collection of Scriptures written by men who were inspired by the Holy Spirit. “Prophecy came not in old time by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” 2 Peter 1:21
•    The Holy Bible is sacred because:
1.    It is written by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
2.    It talks about the Lord God, His dominion over all creation, His love & His Kingdom.
3.    It teaches us how to lead a life of holiness.
4.    It blesses those who live by it and guides those who seek righteousness.
•    The Scriptures or the books of the Holy Bible can be subdivided into two major categories:
1.    The Old Testament
2.    The New Testament
•    The Old Testament consists of 54 books. The New Testament consists of 27 books.
•    The books of the Old Testament were written before the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the New Testament, after His birth.
•    The Old Testament consists of a prophecy and history. The New Testament consists of the fulfillment of the prophecy and its history.
•    The focus of the prophecy in the Old Testament is the Lord Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer. The New Testament is a testament about the fulfillment of the prophecy by the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
•    In the Old Testament, holy fathers received a covenant of a temporal earthly inheritance–Jerusalem. In the New Testament, we received a covenant of an eternal inheritance, the heavenly Jerusalem –the Kingdom of God.

Conclusion: The Holy Bible is a sacred book, written by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit for our benefit. It talks about the Lord God who is Holy, and about His love and dominion over all creation. It teaches us how to live a holy life. In it, we find the teaching and the commandments of the Lord God. Therefore every Orthodox Christian should learn to read it and live by it.
