The Old Testament

Memory Verse: “Prophecy came not in old time by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” 2 Peter 1:21

Introduction
•    The Holy Bible has two major sections: The Old Testament and the New Testament.
•    This lesson is a general overview of the contents of the Old Testament.

The Lesson
•    The Old Testament of the Holy Bible consists of 46 books.
•    These books can be categorized into books of:
1.  Law
2.  History
3.  Prophecy
4.  Literature
•    In the books of law, we find:
1.  The history of creation
2. The story of Adam & Eve
3. The story of righteous people: Enoch, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, and others
4. The story about the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt, where they were under the bondage of slavery, to Jerusalem
5. The Ten Commandments and other commandments of the Lord God
•    In the historical books, we find:
1. The history of the Israelites from the time they inherited the Promised Land to the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ.
2. The history of the  Israel’s kings including that of King David, King Solomon, King Hezekiah.
3. The history of  God’s prophets–Elijah, Elisha, etc.
•    In the books of prophecy, we find some history and primarily prophecy about our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
•    In the books of literature, we find poetic teachings, advices and some history.
•    All the books of the Old Testament were written before the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.
•    All the stories and prophecy focus on the redeeming love of God and the coming of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Conclusion: The Old Testament is a collection of 54 books. The contents of these books include history, law, and prophecy. We find the history of creation, the fall of man, the promise of God and the covenants between Him and His obedient children and servants, the history of the Israelites, the prophets, etc. All the writings, the history and prophecy in these books focus on the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
